Your AC quits on a Saturday in July. The house is already at 82 and climbing. And now you've got a technician telling you it'll cost $1,600 to fix a system you're pretty sure is on its last legs anyway.
So what do you do? Sink the money into a repair, or bite the bullet on a whole new system?
Here's the honest answer most homeowners don't get: sometimes the smart move is a $300 repair, and sometimes throwing $1,600 at an old unit is just delaying a replacement you'll be making next summer anyway. The trick is knowing which situation you're actually in. Below is the same framework our techs use when a customer asks us straight up, "Is this thing even worth fixing?"
Start with the age of the system
Most central AC systems last 12 to 15 years. But that number assumes a mild climate — and South Louisiana is not that.
Down here, cooling season runs from roughly March through October. Your AC isn't coasting through a few hot weeks; it's grinding away, often close to non-stop, for the better part of the year. That kind of run-time wears a system out faster. A 10-year-old unit in Gonzales has usually logged a lot more hours than a 10-year-old unit in, say, Ohio.
Rough guide:

Under 8 years old: Almost always worth repairing. You're nowhere near the end of its life.

8 to 12 years: The gray zone. Now the specific repair and the system's history matter (keep reading).

12+ years: Start seriously weighing replacement, even if this particular repair is cheap. You're on borrowed time.
Age alone doesn't decide it. But it sets the table for every other factor.
Run the repair against two simple cost rules
There are two rules of thumb worth knowing, and they're easy to do in your head.
The 50% rule. If the repair costs more than half of what a comparable new system would cost, replacement usually wins. A $2,500 repair on a system that'd cost $6,000 to replace? That math leans hard toward replacing.
The $5,000 rule. Multiply the age of the system by the repair cost. If the result tops $5,000, lean toward replacement. A 12-year-old unit with a $500 repair lands right at that line ($6,000) — replace territory. A 6-year-old unit with the same $500 repair comes to $3,000 — fix it and move on.
Neither rule is gospel. They're gut checks. But they keep you from making the two expensive mistakes: dumping repair money into a dying system, or scrapping a unit that had years left.
The refrigerant question that catches Louisiana homeowners off guard
This is the one that surprises people, so pay attention if your system is on the older side.
If your AC was installed before about 2010, there's a good chance it runs on R-22 refrigerant — the stuff most people call Freon. R-22 has been phased out of production. It still exists, but it's scarce and the price has climbed to the point where a single refrigerant recharge on an R-22 system can run several hundred dollars, sometimes more.
So here's the trap: you've got a 14-year-old R-22 system with a refrigerant leak. The repair itself might not sound crazy. But you're paying premium prices to put disappearing refrigerant into an aging system that's going to leak again. That's usually the moment to replace rather than repair — you're not fixing the system, you're renting it by the month.
Newer systems use R-410A, and the industry is now transitioning again to A2L refrigerants (our own installs already use A2L-compliant equipment). If your system runs R-410A and it's otherwise healthy, that's a point in favor of repairing — you're not fighting a phase-out.
When repair is genuinely the right call
Replacement isn't always the answer, and any company that tells you otherwise is selling, not advising. Repair is the smart money when:

The system is under 8–10 years old and generally reliable.

It's a single, inexpensive failure — a blown capacitor, a bad contactor, a failed fan motor. These are common, and they're often same-visit fixes in the a few-hundred-dollar range, not thousands. (These are exactly the kinds of sudden no-cool failures we handle.)

The unit is still under manufacturer warranty — especially for big-ticket parts like the compressor or coil.

It runs R-410A and there's no pattern of repeated breakdowns.
If that's your situation, fix it, keep up with maintenance, and get several more good years out of the system.
When replacement wins
On the flip side, replacement is usually the better investment when:

The system is 12–15+ years old.

You've got an R-22 system with a refrigerant leak (see above).

The compressor or evaporator coil failed and it's out of warranty — these are the most expensive parts, and on an old system they rarely pencil out.

You've called for repairs two or three times in a single season. A system that keeps breaking is telling you something.

Your energy bills keep creeping up. An old, low-efficiency unit works harder and runs longer in our heat, and you feel it every month on the Entergy bill. A modern high-efficiency system can meaningfully cut that cooling cost.
A couple of real scenarios
Scenario one: A 6-year-old system in Prairieville won't turn on during a heat wave. The culprit is a blown capacitor — a roughly $250 fix. Repair, every time. The system is young, healthy, and one cheap part away from running like new.
Scenario two: A 14-year-old unit in Geismar loses cooling. It's an R-22 system, and the compressor has a refrigerant leak. The repair quote is $1,900. Replace. You'd be pouring nearly two grand into disappearing refrigerant and a worn-out system that's statistically near the end anyway — and you'd likely be back on the phone within a year or two.
Same question, opposite answers. That's why the diagnosis matters more than any rule of thumb.

Repair versus replace comes down to four things: age, the cost of the specific repair, what refrigerant you're running, and how often the system has been failing. Put those together and the answer is usually clearer than it feels at 82 degrees and rising.
